How to Create a Bit Of Autumn Sunshine

I've chosen to feature this single bloom. Hiding it's centre behind its golden petals it has a shy sort of character.

With my drawing completed I begin laying in the palest yellow pigment. The light in this painting is coming from the left. I will be glazing on multiple layers of a variety of yellows to bring out it's sunny nature. Placing the darkest shades on the left away from the light.

Next I add the dark centre thereby setting up the rest of my values for the whole piece. I create a purpleish brown pigment. I place darkest and most purple areas are up against my yellow petals. As purple is the compliment of yellow I am using it to define the uneven dark shape. Here I am also placing the darkest darks against the lightest petals to really make the painting pop. Using a damp brush on barely dry paper I lift out and define the centre section of the flower.

I am starting to fill in the paintings midtones, developing the greens and giving the painting a contrasting background.

Stay tuned for more progress next week!
