Straight From My Garden; The Development of “Drama Queen”

After capturing a good quality closeup photo of this amazing bloom. I draw out my work and begin.
Rules about working light to dark or dark to light are there to be adapted.
Often I just work outward from my focal area.
Setting up the highly detailed centre of interest in this piece is done by using deep
purple based pinks. As purple is the compliment or opposite of yellow,
these colours create a colour vibration that draws the eye.

I am known for using glazes (clear transparent layers) one on top of the other. I can use up forty layers of pigment, building one layer over the last thoroughly dry one. Created like this artists get a unique glow with this medium.

As a traditionalist I use no white pigment in my paintings. White paint creates a chalky opaque look that dulls everything around it. Transparent watercolour is like stained glass, When done well the white of the paper bonces light back through the transparent layer to the viewer.
