Values, Make Your Paintings POP

Pale and passed over. Not the least bit eye catching this stunning bloom is lost on this pale gray background.

The flower has a bit more zing when we use the compliment of yellow against pale purple

( (O.K. in this case pale mauve) as a backdrop.

Still not a big winner, but much more visible.

WOW look what happens when we throw in a true dark!!!

Suddenly our flower comes to life.

These photos are only a reference and in this case just a simple example of how to use values and even a bit of color theory to make an image POP.  This image will be used in an up coming painting and how to paint blog post.I am not suggesting that you immediately throw black behind every light subject.Just learn to add some darks. This bloom becomes much more alive and interesting when rendered in paint with a varied dark behind it.

Here is a better example.
